Giacomo da Lentini Sonnet XX
The lily fades as soon as it is picked,
Since it's no longer joined by nature's bond;
An when I'm parted from you for a spell,
My lady love, I ache in every joint.
Since every lover I surpass in love,
My heart ascends to great and lofty heights.
In every place I go Love strikes me hard,
Just like an eagle having caught its prey.
Unhappy me, born at a point in time
When I could love but you, most noble one,
And let my lady hear these words from me.
The instant I saw you I felt the blow,
I served you well and praised you everywhere,
My heart shall never part, my love, from you.
